Where we are
Mala Duba is one of the three hamlets of Živogošće, along with Porat and Blato, on the southern part of the Makarska Riviera. The hamlets are about a kilometre and a half apart and linked by the coastal road. Biokovo rises behind us, and across the sea lies the eastern tip of Hvar with Sućuraj. Makarska is about 22 km to the north, and the ferry to Hvar at Drvenik is 8 km to the south.
The beach and the sea
Mala Duba beach is a three-minute walk away. It is a pebble beach, and pines give shade almost to the water’s edge. Early in the morning the sea is calm and clear, and in the evening the sun softens – those are our favourite hours. The sea is warmest for swimming from June to September, averaging 22–26 °C; in May the hardier swimmers go in. Water shoes come in handy for swimming. A little further on, 10 minutes on foot, lies Velika Duba bay.

A little history
In neighbouring Porat, at the foot of Biokovo and not far from the sea, stands the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Cross, built at the beginning of the 17th century. Next to it, in the rock above a freshwater spring right on the shore, Latin verses are carved in which the Roman Licinianus celebrated that spring – the Epigram of Licinianus. Remains of Roman country villas have also been found in Mala Duba.
